Exploring Atlanta’s Ponce City Market

Located in the historic Old Fourth Ward on the east side of Atlanta, Georgia – the Ponce City Market is a mixed-use development years in the making. The 2,100,000 SF building (the building’s lot covers over 16 acres), one of the largest by volume in the Southeast United States, was used by Sears, Roebuck and Co. from 1926-1987. The location, between Ponce de Leon and North Avenues, was seen as the urban core of early 20th century Atlanta, giving Sears the opportunity for prime real estate. The company bought the building in 1925 for a mere $6 million dollars (which would translate to over $65 million in today’s economy). Over the years expansions were made to the building, including a farmers market, parking deck and a 10-story addition, before closing in 1987.

Fast-forward to 2011, when developer Jamestown Properties decided to take on “the largest historic restoration project in the country”. The building officially opened to the public in late 2014, offering national and local retail, restaurants, boutiques, office space, and residential units. In 2015, leading retail brands like Anthropology, Michael Stars, Williams Sonoma, Madewell and Lululemon joined the already robust tenant list.

While the space is full of unique retail options and delicious local fare, my top three recommendations for ‘must-stop-visits’ are:

  • Food Hall … specifically Hop’s Chicken. The space seamlessly merges old with new and oozes urban energy. Hop’s has a retro approachability loaded with all the charm of true southern hospitality (oh … and the fried chicken isn’t bad either).
  • Rye 51. What’s better than the combination of a luxury retailer and an in-store whiskey bar?! This unique brand of men’s dry goods and apparel is known for their customer service and tailoring.
  • Citizen Supply. A retailer tapping into that small-batch, artisan devotion so popular right now. But this is no Pinterest, arts-and-crafts display, their unique, curated offerings of products are created by an impressive roster of young independent brands.
