Foreword: On Friday, August 8th FRCH challenged our entire team to a 24-Hour Design Pop-Up Challenge. We divided the entire company into 8 cross-disciplinary teams to collaboratively create a pop-up concept within 24 hours. The winning concept will be implemented at Cincinnati’s MidPoint Music Festival starting September 25th. Because of the inspired, original results we received, we will be sharing all 8 concepts over the next several weeks on Creative Fuel.
Name: Funk Haus (Team #3)
Concept Overview: It has been proven that music and art education improves cognitive ability, math and reading skills, develops critical thinking and leadership skills, and encourages self-esteem and social interaction skills in our youth. Sadly these programs are being neglected due to lack of funding in our schools. Entitled the Funk Haus, our concept was designed to bring awareness to the importance of childhood music and art education in an interactive way that appeals to festival attendees of all ages, especially the Millennial generation that are in high attendance at the MidPoint Music Festival. After all, without early music and art education programs, festivals like MidPoint might not even exist. We chose the name based on our concept to transform the FrameShop space into a musical fun house (bringing the “Funk”) with a nod to the German heritage of Cincinnati’s Over The Rhine area (“Haus”).
The experience begins on the street, where festival goers are attracted to the Funk Haus through projected light and sound. The lighting projected from the building will change color and move in concert with the music being played inside. The storefront windows will be transformed into mini-stages with microphones and props for impromptu karaoke performances viewable from the street. Once inside the Funk Haus, all will be encouraged to participate in a variety of activities including playing music on over-sized instruments and contributing to a public art display. The underlying theme of this creative collaboration is a campaign to raise funds for charitable organizations that focus on art and music education for our youth including locally based ArtsWave and VH1’s Save the Music Foundation. These organizations will be heavily promoted and supported through a social media campaign before, during and after the event. Special guest appearances by the musical artists featured at MidPoint will add to the excitement – giving festival goers the opportunity to meet and even play songs with the bands they came to watch at the Festival.
Beginning with a white box throughout the interior space, bold colors will come in the form of the over-sized musical instruments within the Stage and Studio zones as well as the public art display within the secondary Art Lab zone. The outdoor courtyard space will be transformed into a tranquil natural respite for relaxation and education about the charitable organizations that the Funk Haus supports and the importance of early childhood music and art education.
Many of us benefited personally from arts and music programs when we were young. In many ways they molded us into the adults that we have become and the careers we have chosen in the design industry. The Funk Haus is a fun and interactive experience that represents our fight to ensure that these programs do not go away; that they are available to children for generations to come.
