Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board

I love this mesmerizing new photo series by Natsumi Hayashi. The images are playful and yet filled with tension as your brain attempts to make sense of the mysteriously hovering woman. I’ve collected a few of my favorites here, but everyone should take a second to visit her site and partake in the fantasy.

The Tokyo resident has been uploading self-portraits of her “daily levitations” series over the past several months (with periodic breaks for photos of her cats). Her deceptively simple process includes carefully framing her shot, setting the auto shutter and a well timed leap. The photos are immediately fascinating as she floats there, defying gravity, the world moving around her. As a series the images become a beautiful photo journal of Japan and Natsumi’s eclectic fashions.

It’s inspiring to see someone take a fundamental idea and with perseverance and creativity turn it into something that sparks the imagination. Here’s hoping Natsumi continues to share her story of the magical woman lighter than air.
