The Multiplane Effect

We can learn a lot about rendering a good composition by watching cartoons.  Art directors on some of the earliest shorts and features understood the importance of pulling an audience into a scene with the use of background, middle-ground and foreground elements.

The Multiplane Camera made an even more dramatic use of this technique by separating planes of an animation background on sheets of glass and moving an audience though them.

The separation of planes coincides with the separation of value.  The background having the least amount of contrast while the middle ground has the highest.  The foreground is typically a darker value to help frame the scene.

Architectural Rendering can benefit greatly by using this compositional method.  The viewer is more likely to be drawn into the space and feel as if they are part of the scene.
