Fashion Legends: Past & Present

Last week, the world witnessed an epic moment in the history of fashion design. Not only did the iconic Women’s Wear Daily celebrate its centennial Birthday, but newbie fashion phenomenon Gilt Groupe was at the helm of the party planning.

Gilt invited eleven of the hottest new names in fashion design to re-imagine and create one-of-a-kind looks inspired by the biggest fashion icons of the last century. Muses included Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly and Ginger Rogers.

The finished products were showcased in an exhibition at Lincoln Center during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week with accompanying imagery from the WWD archives.

While Gilt Groupe launched the sale of these limited-edition pieces exclusively through their website.

This type of ingenious co-branding is the kind of thing that reminds me why I wanted to become a brand strategist in the first place. Not only is it a clever and downright fun celebration of fashion through the years, but it also represents something greater. A nod to the past from a company (Gilt Groupe) that since its inception just a few short years ago, has managed to revolutionize the face of fashion retail as we know it by leveraging the power of the internet. It demonstrates to me exactly why WWD was able to blow out 100 candles on their cake, because they are progressive enough to look towards the future while celebrating their past, all the while embracing new forms of media and retail channels despite their humble beginnings in black and white newsprint. I think it’s safe to say that this won’t be the last centennial they celebrate!
