Pack Expo International 2012: Processing to Packaging

I attended the International Packaging Expo last week in Chicago, Illinois to gain further knowledge of the packaging process while identifying products and vendors to specify for upcoming projects. Declared as the world’s largest packaging show, more than 46,000 people attended with over 1,800 vendor booths to visit.

Toronto Sweetness

The shop that caught my attention and thrilled my senses most on a recent trip to Toronto was a small café on Queens St. named Nadége. Directly across from Trinity Bellwoods Park the area is a wonderful mix of culture and people watching, the perfect place to relax and grab a treat.

Great Boots AND Brand Personality… WHAT?!?

In my never-ending quest for great (and travel appropriate) boots and only having disappointing retail experiences trying to find them, I finally had to turn to online sources – and frankly, I will never go back! Piperlime.com has won me over!  While I knew I would love the boots – I had no idea the Brand experience would be so delightful. Read more of this post

Coca-Cola and The Holidays

Am I the only one that finds it nearly impossible to resist buying a case of Coca-Cola when their packaging changes for the holidays and good ol’ reliable Santa Claus stares back with his warm, jolly smile?  I always find myself wholly enticed by the red on red packaging and the promise of warmth that a drink of refreshing Coke delivers this time of year.  Coca-Cola has genuinely co-branded itself with the winter season and somehow this makes it taste even better!

blast from the past

Established in 1964, Rio Coffee is celebrating the birth of their brand. Their premium coffee blend captures the retro graphic look of the 1960′s, while maintaining relevancy with the use of contemporary typography. The bold, retro colors and geometric shapes are appropriately groovy. The contrast of color against the tin canister helps support the playfulness of the brand, while communicating the premium status of the coffee.

Less is More

Courtesy of the Lovely Package, Scholz & Friends ingeniously designed Panasonic’s earbud packaging. The earbuds are strategically placed in the package to resemble a music note. The innovative use of the actual product eliminates the need for more than a couple of lines of text, calling for a ‘noteworthy’ packaging design.

Designing outside the box

Check out these juice boxes designed by Japanese industrial designer Naoto Fukasawa. The exterior of each juice box was designed to reference the skin of the fruit contained in each different flavor. The colors and textures are very recognizable – little text is needed on the packaging in order to successfully communicate the banana, kiwi and strawberry flavors. Now that’s refreshing design!

“Tea” Shirts

Designed by Soon Mo Kang, the Hanger Tea consists of bags of tea shaped like T-shirts. The shirts are draped over hangers, which innovatively hang onto the edge of a mug.

The interior and exterior of the packaging functions like a closet. The “tea” shirts hang onto a rod, while the clear plastic package opens by sliding from left to right, much like the functionality of a closet.
