1968 Revisited: Tech Blasts Off

Apollo 8In keeping with our theme this year of looking back at the year FRCH was founded and the evolution that has occurred since, I recently did a little research to learn more about what happened that year in addition to the well-known cultural and social changes that occurred.  Anyone who works with me would tell you I am NOT an expert in technology.  However, I am a believer in studying the past in order to better understand the present and the future – and in my research I quickly discovered that 1968 was a year that brought many advances in technology that continue to shape our lives today.  In those 12 months, while the country experienced social revolution, turmoil and great tragedy, some amazing advances in technology occurred at the same time.  Let the history lesson begin!

The New Era of Super Hero Films

CF_hero1Hollywood is nothing if not predictable when it comes to bringing us a re-launch, sequel, franchise or “reboot” of a story that will be box-office-safe. There have been plenty of super hero “flicks” (calling them films seems inappropriate) that turn comic book stories into jokes, feature costumes that look like they were purchased at a convenience store, and set designs that may or may not have been a school’s craft project. However, studios are now bringing us a new and powerful era of super hero films that do more than deserve our attention, they demand it. Read more of this post

Postcards From Europe – Part 2

My Mom always said my postcards may have been pictures of the places I’d been, but my messages were always about what I’d eaten. I love to cook. I love to eat well. And I love to travel and visit with other foodies.
In Holland I stayed with friends, who live in a small village south of Amsterdam, foodies of course. He is the entrée and dessert man, she the queen of salads and all things vegetarian. We shopped, we cooked, we ate well. Read more of this post

World Choir Games 2012

The City of Cincinnati is dressed in its best to host the 2012 World Choir Games, currently underway in venues throughout the city.  The World Choir Games began in 2000 and is the largest choir competition in the world.  Its motto is “Singing Together Brings Nations Together”.  This week, Cincinnati becomes the first city in the USA to host the event, which has previously been hosted in Austria, South Korea, Germany and China.  A quick walk through downtown today was truly inspirational.  I’m so proud of my city I had to write about it!

Creativity Practice

Sometimes when I feel like I’m experiencing imaginative stagnation – or if I’m just bored while waiting for the serving staff to deliver my meal – I search for a way to kick-start my creativity. My mother and I used to scribble on the back of paper place mats to give each other some doodle direction. We would turn the paper until we could see an image in the scribble, and then we would develop another place mat masterpiece. I later upgraded this practice to scribbling with watercolor paint because it allows me to better see where my artwork originated. I have since called this practice technique “Blobbing.” It is a great exercise to strengthen your visual mind, and to keep you keen on spontaneity. If you have ever spent some time lying in a field making shapes out of the clouds, then you will know exactly what to do. Read more of this post

FRCH Wins 2012 Herman Miller & APG Good Design Challenge!

Recently, a team of FRCH’ers joined 13 other local design firms to participate in Herman Miller & APG’s Good Design Challenge. Each team was presented with the iconic Eames molded plastic chair and asked, “What Inspires You?”

The only rules were that the base must remain attached to the chair. Any and all transformations were fair game and the end results were a little bit of everything.
