Did it make you laugh?… Or cry?

The new Comedy Central logo has elicited a vast range of responses from Boooooooooring to Kick A**! The network set out to update their look, which has gone nearly unchanged since the 90s, launching the new logo January 1. According to thelab, the designers for the project, the goal was to create an ‘irreverent wink’ and to have an inherent simplicity that works on all levels of media.
I appreciate simplicity as much as the next designer – and there‘s no question that this is better than the previous logos – but I’m not sold on the fact that this is ‘simple’ and not simply corporate and generic.
I will say, i do think it is much more successful in action than as a static logo – check out this launch video – but what happened to a balance of both? Is Branding trending toward less personality instead of more – simply to ‘accommodate’ media? The irreverence and whimsy IS captured more successfully in these secondary uses of the logo as well.
So what’s your take on it? Do you love it? Hate it? Do you think they’ve achieved irreverence? Is the ‘grown up’ Comedy Central a network you can identify with? Have they skewed too far corporate, mimicking the copyright, power and copyleft symbols?

I can dig it!
I have to admit…at first, I was a bit underwhelmed by the new logo, but now that I have seen it in use on the network, I am learning to appreciate its subtle, more grown-up playfulness.
I agree with you Marty, on it’s own the logo didn’t wow me, but the application of it through their print, online and tv ad campaigns has won me over. I especially like that the animation is always changing, so it’s not just a static logo.
